: I have TMJ and was given a bite splint to wear, which has changed my bite so that my top and bottom front teeth no longer touch and I cannot chew anything with them. This makes it nearly impossible to eat any fresh fruits and vegetables without pain or taking an entire hour! My friend told me the only way to fix my bite now is with surgery. But if the bite splint changed my bite in the first place, can't one be made to change it back? Does anyone know?
Hi Maria: The first TMJ specialist I saw had me wearing a lower splint during the day and an upper one at night. That made my bite open up even more than it was and now it's really screwed up. I tried to get it to close up with a different lower splint, but it hasn't worked. I don't know what will happen now. Sometimes braces or crowns can fix your bite. In rare instances, people have Orthognathic surgery. I'm going to avoid that if I can. I hope you find someone to help you. Sue
